MissionsThe missions committee responsibilities include overseeing the designations for our monthly communion offerings, deciding what missions projects our congregation should support and informing the congregation about the projects, keeping the congregation aware of special projects of UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief), and keeping our pledges of designated amounts to support Open Door, Amistad, and Habitat for Humanity.
In the recent past we have helped with peace vigils, hung 1000+ paper cranes in Fellowship Hall to honor the victims of 9/11, 2001, collected both back-to-school supplies and also Christmas gifts for Amistad children (including a Spanish New Testament for each one), established a prayer board in the back of the sanctuary, supported missionaries in Japan, and highlighted Advance Specials of UMCOR. Some of the missions trips that our church has gone on in the past include the following:
A mission trip to the earthquake destroyed island of Haiti is planned for Spring 2011.
If anyone would like to join the Missions Committee, please see Lyn Johnson or Pastor Evangelista. We're always open to expanding the committee and expanding our outreach! The United Methodist Church is involved in hundreds of missions programs around the world. The Advance for Christ and His Church (often just referred to as "The Advance"), is an official program of The General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, for "voluntary, designated second-mile financial giving where 100% of your gift goes to the ministry of your choice."
