A Spirit of Wisdom
“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot hear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.” John 16:12
When we have questions, we typically pay a visit to Google. Or, if you are of another generation, you may consult a dictionary or encyclopedia or ask your local librarian. We have so much information available to us than any time before in human history. Yet, it seems we debate “truth” as much as we ever have before. We seem to have so many “answers” that lead us to more and more questions.
In the church, we continue to have debates over God’s truth. We dissect Jesus’ words and try to make sense of all His teachings. Yet, even Jesus admits that we couldn’t bear to hear everything he wished to say to us. Perhaps Jesus was worried about information overload. So, Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would come to us and be our guide in the search for truth. You see, it’s not about having all the so-called “answers” or being able to quote scripture backwards and forwards. We find truth through an intimate connection with God more than any other source.
So, we must continue to remain humble and open to the movement of the Spirit. We may think we have all the answers, but the Spirit offers us wisdom beyond what we believe to have figured out. I know as I go deeper in faith, I come away with more questions than answers. But I trust in the Spirit of Truth to lead me through the confusing, the unclear, and the mysterious. Don’t bother with Google or Siri. Let the Spirit of Truth lead you to greater wisdom.
