Faith in Action
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.” (Matthew 7:24)
How many pages of scripture have you read? How many sermons have you heard? How many Bible Studies and small groups have you joined? For some of us, that number might be in the thousands. My hope is that we’ve all acted upon these thousands of messages we’ve received. As Jesus teaches, we are wise to act upon His teachings and bear fruit in service to God’s kingdom.
Growing up, parents and mentors had a lot of advice and wisdom for me. In fact, wise persons still offer me sound advice as I navigate life as a young adult. Do you think I always follow what they have to tell me? Nope. Sometimes, I think my way might be better. In some instances, I turn out okay. In others, I regret not acting on wise advice. Many times, my own ways and methods prove rather foolish and make my circumstances more difficult.
And so it is with God’s Word and God’s direction. Unfortunately, we sometimes think we know better than God. God’s ways sometimes seem so backwards and impractical. Many times when I follow God’s plans, I am surprised at how well they work and the fruit that comes from listening to God. We all need to listen to God’s wisdom. We may think we have all the answers, but history shows we all still have much to learn.
In the end, we can choose the wise path or the foolish path. We can build our house on the rock or on the sand. May we remember the unexpected blessing and fruit that comes from acting upon God’s teaching. As Jesus says, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”
