Happiness: A Way of Being
In Luke 9, Jesus says, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it. What does it profit them if they gain the whole world, but lose or forfeit themselves?” In our study on happiness, we’ve seen over and over again that true happiness is found beyond ourselves. When we focus only on our own unhappiness, we struggle to find happiness. We look to material possessions and other options that do not sustain joy in our lives. To discover and sustain happiness, we must stay focused on the bigger picture.
If we only focus on ourselves, we will struggle to find happiness. True happiness is found in discovering our role and purpose in life. As we take a step back, we are better able to see where God is at work in our lives and in the world. And God invites us to participate in this work. Studies show that our generosity and small acts of kindness cultivate happy feelings within us. We feel good when we have purpose and feel useful. There is so much need in our world and so many opportunities for us to be useful in service to God. So, may we continue to look beyond ourselves and discover the purpose and plans God has for our lives. This is where we will find true and lasting happiness.
