Happiness Beyond Circumstances

We often fall for the illusion that our happiness is contingent on our circumstances. If things are going well, we should be happy. But, when things are not going well, we have no choice but to be sad and angry. However, as Christians and people of the Word, we know our faith promises us sustained peace and hope in all circumstances!

In Paul’s letter to the Philippians, he offers a profound message of peace and hope. Yet, Paul writes the letter from a prison cell as he awaits trial and possible execution. Paul’s faith puts everything in perspective for him and he is able to find strength and peace in Jesus Christ. Paul experiences a “peace that passes all understanding” and has faith to trust that “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”

Each day offers us a choice. We can choose to give into our circumstances or we can seek God’s help to find peace and joy beyond our circumstances. And there are small steps we can take to find happiness in all times. We need to be mindful of the present and not get sucked into worries about past regrets or future unknowns. We must practice gratitude daily and be thankful for the blessings we do have. And we must let go and trust that God holds the future. Our plans may change, but God’s love and care for us never changes! So, may we choose to seek happiness each day and “rejoice in the Lord always!”
