Joseph's Story: The Call to Adventure
“So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the long robe with sleeves that he wore; and they took him and threw him into a pit.” Genesis 37:23-24
Joseph’s path to greatness did not start out well. In fact, it’s by overcoming challenges that Joseph finds his way to better circumstances. I’m sure our stories and experiences relate to this understanding. In our lives, we will receive calls to adventure. They may involve a voluntary response or we may find ourselves on an adventure we never signed up for in the first place. When Joseph is sold off by his brothers, he embarks on an adventure he did not choose to take.
God doesn’t always come to us in our best moments. However, it’s usually at our worst moments that we look to God for help and direction. When we find ourselves in the “pits” and downs” of life, we must seek after God’s call to adventure. You see, God enters into our stories and redeems our situations. If Joseph’s story ended at the bottom of the pit, it would be a terrible story. The reason we love the Joseph story is that God takes broken and difficult situations and uses Joseph in spite of them. God comes in and redeems Joseph’s story so he can ultimately save his people.
So, what calls to adventure have you taken in your life? What call to adventure awaits you in this season of your life and faith? We may not have it all together (Joseph surely didn’t at the beginning of his story). But God is working in the midst our stories. Will we open our eyes to see our lives through God’s eyes? Join us throughout August as we explore this quest together.
