Pressing Forward When Life Knocks Us Down
Last week, we looked at how God can help us back up when life knocks us down. When we are knocked out, we are dazed and confused. We suffer pain and find our perspective flipped upside-down. We can struggle to our feet when we continue to hold onto the very things that are holding us down, like regrets and fear. So, how do we find the strength and courage to get back up?
Our Christian walk is a journey where we continue to press forward toward righteousness. As Paul writes in Philippians 3, “I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.” For motivation, we may remember the words, “Keep your eye on the prize.” When we have goals to strive for, we have a reason to get back up. And to get back up, we must let go of what seeks to keep us down. Paul advises us to “forget what lies behind and strain forward to what lies ahead.” No matter our history of failures or pain, God is there to forgive us and make us whole. God is there to give us the strength to get back up and keep moving forward.
In the life of faith, it’s not about how many times we stumble but the many times in which God lifts us up. It’s not about our mistakes, for they are forgiven. It’s about the wisdom and perseverance we acquire along the way. So, as we continue through this new year, keep your eyes on the prize. As Rocky Balboa says, “It ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward…That’s how winning is done!” If you stumble, allow God to pick you back up. The most important thing is that we keep moving forward!
