What Satisfies Us

I believe that most of us are bread lovers. We love to chow down on all the tasty carb options available to us. As good as the food may be, our satisfaction does not last. After a few hours, we are hungry again. In life, we seek after things that satisfy us as we seek to fill our needs with all that is good. However, sometimes we fill ourselves with what is not so good or satisfying. For example, advertisements try to sell us happiness in cheap plastic toys, expensive vacations, greasy fast food, or a new dinette set! We may be granted temporary satisfaction, but we’ll only grow hungry for something else.

So, what satisfies? Jesus says, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” Jesus is the provision from on high that truly satisfies our deepest needs and deepest longings. We try to fill our appetite with so much that proves only a distraction from the One who truly satisfies. Jean Vanier writes, “To let Jesus dwell in us means that we have cleaned up the house of our hearts in order to give Him space so that He can live in us. We are no longer filled with ourselves. We find joy in being and living with Jesus, the Beloved, and in doing what He asks of us.” We find our joy and purpose through Jesus. And He provides us with all we need to live our lives fully for His name’s sake. Jesus is the bread of life! Seek after what satisfies!
